They used the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft to record their information. Unfortunately, is was lost on November 2, 2006. It successfully explored and mapped the red planet of Mars for about 10 years. On this site you can find the important discoveries of the MGS mission along with: atmospheric measurements, late Martian weather readings, Martian Temperature, latitude coverage, and images of the Martian atmosphere. The Mars Global Surveyor was launched on November 7, 1996. Tomorrow commemorates the 1 year death of the MGS. You guys should pay homage by going to this site.
